Getting set up

What does setup involve?

Install GoodMinutes on the iPhone or iPad your child uses (iOS 17 or later), then open it and tap through these steps yourself:

  1. Who’s learning: your child’s name, birth month and year, an animal buddy, and which subjects to include.
  2. Screen Time access: iOS asks you to allow it (see below).
  3. Apps to lock: pick apps or whole categories, like Games or Streaming.
  4. How strict to start: Relaxed, Balanced or Focused. Change any of it later.
  5. Parent PIN: settings and overrides hide behind it.
  6. Parent account: enter your email. We send a welcome email so you can confirm it’s you.
  7. Choose a plan, then hand the device to your child.
How do I get back to the parent settings?

Tap the Parents tab and enter your PIN. That’s where you’ll find the progress report, Kids, blocked apps, time and bedtime, per-app limits, the “Give 15 bonus minutes” button, your subscription and your account.

I forgot my parent PIN.

On the PIN screen, tap Forgot PIN?. Solve the multiplication problem (it’s meant to need pen and paper), then choose a new 4-digit PIN. After too many wrong tries, the Parents area pauses for a few minutes.

How are minutes earned?

Each day starts with a free allowance (set by your preset, for example 30 minutes on Balanced), plus up to 30 unused minutes rolled over from yesterday. On top of that:

  • a Boost (3 questions) earns 5 minutes, up to 3 times a day;
  • a lesson earns 20 minutes;
  • a story earns 10 minutes.

Earned time stops at the daily maximum you set. Weekends get 1.5× the allowance and the maximum. During bedtime hours nothing unlocks. You can change all of these under Parents → Blocked apps, time & bedtime.

Screen Time permission

Why does GoodMinutes need Screen Time access?

It’s how the app locks and unlocks the apps you chose. It uses Apple’s official parental-controls system (Family Controls). Apple only lets GoodMinutes see anonymous tokens for the apps you pick, not their names, and your child’s activity never leaves the device.

The permission prompt didn’t appear, or it failed.
  • Make sure the device is connected to the internet, and that Screen Time isn’t restricted in Settings → Screen Time.
  • If the device isn’t a Family Sharing child device, GoodMinutes offers Personal mode instead. Approve it when iOS asks.
  • Try again from Parents → Blocked apps, time & bedtime → “Re-enable Screen Time access”.
The Parents area says “Screen Time access is OFF”.

Someone switched off GoodMinutes’ access in iOS Settings, so apps can’t be locked. Tap “Re-enable Screen Time access” under Parents → Blocked apps, time & bedtime. To stop it happening again, use Family Sharing (below).

Can my child delete GoodMinutes to get around it?

iOS has a setting to stop app deletion: Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases → Deleting Apps → Don’t Allow. Protect it with a Screen Time passcode your child doesn’t know.

Family Sharing vs Personal mode

What’s the difference?

Family mode (tamper-proof): used automatically when the device is signed in with a child’s Apple ID in your Family Sharing group. Only a parent can turn off Screen Time access.

Personal mode: used on any other device, such as a hand-me-down iPad signed in with your own Apple ID. Lessons, locking and earning all work the same. The one trade-off is that someone with the device could switch Screen Time access off in iOS Settings. That’s usually fine for younger kids.

You can see which mode you’re in under Parents → Blocked apps, time & bedtime → Protection.

How do I set up Family Sharing?

On your own iPhone: Settings → tap your name at the top → Family Sharing → Add Member → Create Child Account, or invite your child’s existing Apple ID. Then sign your child’s device in with their Apple ID and run Screen Time setup again in GoodMinutes.

Adding kids

How do I add another child?

Parents → Kids → Add a child. Each child has their own levels, progress and report. Kids pick themselves from big avatar tiles when the app opens, or from the avatar button on the home screen. Blocked apps and the minutes balance belong to the device, so siblings sharing one device share them.

Lessons are too easy or too hard.

Open a subject and use the Level check to skip ahead. GoodMinutes also adjusts as your child goes: skills unlock as they’re mastered, and skills your child struggles with appear under “Needs practice” in the Parents report.

Can I move my child’s progress to a new device?

No. To keep your child’s information private, progress is stored only on the device and never on our servers, so it can’t be transferred. Deleting the app deletes the progress. Your purchase moves with your Apple ID.

Purchases and restoring

How do I restore my purchase on a new device?

Sign in with the same Apple ID (or one in the same Family Sharing group), then go to Parents → Restore purchases.

How do I change or cancel my plan?

Parents → Change or cancel subscription, or Settings → tap your name at the top → Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial or current period ends to avoid the next charge. If you buy Lifetime while a subscription is running, cancel the subscription too. Apple doesn’t do it automatically.

How do I get a refund?

Apple handles all payments and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We never see your payment details.

Your account

I didn’t get the welcome email.

Check your spam or promotions folder, and check the address shown under Parents → Parent account. The app works while you wait.

I got a GoodMinutes email but didn’t sign up.

Just ignore it. Someone probably typed your address by mistake. Unless you tap “Yes, this is me”, we won’t email that address again. If you’d like it removed, email us.

How do I stop emails about new Hensu apps?

Use the unsubscribe link in any of those emails, or switch off “Emails about new Hensu kids apps” under Parents → Parent account.

How do I delete my account?

Parents → Delete account. This removes your account and email from our servers. Your child’s progress on the device stays. To keep using GoodMinutes afterward, you’ll need to sign up again. Deleting your account doesn’t cancel an Apple subscription, so cancel that separately. If you no longer have the device, email us from your account address and we’ll delete it.
